Job Description

Insurance companies and their clients are protected by a network of state and federal laws and regulations. Practicing your legal skills at an insurance company offers you both interesting and challenging work and the flexibility and work-life balance that insurance is known for. 

Legal jobs in insurance include positions for licensed attorneys as well as those for paralegals, law clerks, legal assistants, and specialists in records retention and licensing.  

House counsel and claims attorneys defend customers’ claims without the pressure of meeting a billable-hours target. Paralegals support attorneys with research and writing; legal assistants do much of the same but may have less legal training and focus more on administrative work.

Degree Required?
Yes

A claims attorney or house counsel must have a bachelor’s degree, a law degree, and be licensed to practice. Most paralegals hold bachelor’s degrees, and many complete an industry-approved paralegal training program. Legal assistants don’t typically have a degree.

Additional Education

Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and an active license in the state in which the position is located. Additionally, many legal assistants have completed certificate training programs or on-the-job training.

Preferred Previous Experience

Previous experience of typically preferred though may not be required depending on the position and company.

Earning Potential: $40,000-$200,000+

Salary estimates include jobs from paralegal to attorney and vary based on previous experience, seniority, company and geographic location.
